Glossary

Veneer terms, in plain English

The words that appear on quotes, grade cards and shipping documents. General industry definitions — the quote states what applies to your order.

Flitch
A section of log prepared for slicing, and the bundle of leaves cut from it, kept in cutting order.
Leaf
A single sheet of veneer as it comes off the knife.
Plain slice
Slicing parallel to the centre of the log. The face shows a crown, or cathedral, figure.
Straight grain
A face where the grain runs in close parallel lines rather than forming a crown.
Quarter cut
Slicing roughly at right angles to the growth rings. Produces a straight stripe and, in oak, ray fleck.
Rift cut
Slicing at an angle to the rays to reduce fleck and keep a tight, straight grain.
Book match
Laying consecutive leaves open like the pages of a book, so the figure mirrors at each joint.
Slip match
Laying consecutive leaves side by side without turning them, repeating the figure across the panel.
Grade
The appearance class of a face — at Fuqiao, AA, A (listed as AB on species pages) and B.
ISPM 15
The international standard for treating wood packaging used in export shipments.
FOB
Free on Board. The buyer takes over freight and risk once goods are loaded at the named port.
MOQ
Minimum order quantity. At Fuqiao it is published separately for thin and thick veneer.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before a quote

What is the difference between AA, A, AB and B?

AA: Minimal small live knots. No visible color variation. Uniform grain pattern. Typical use: Premium furniture · Cabinet doors · Visible panels. A grade, labeled AB on a species page: Minor natural knots allowed. Slight color variation acceptable. Clean overall appearance. Typical use: Case furniture · Cabinet bodies · Side panels. B: Knots and color variation allowed. Full natural wood character. Structurally sound. Typical use: Back panels · Non-visible surfaces · Inner parts.

What thicknesses and minimums can I order?

Published thickness is 0.3–5.0 mm. Minimum order is 5,000 sqm for 0.3–0.6 mm and 3,000 sqm for 0.8–5.0 mm.

What should I send for a quote?

Species, grade, thickness and quantity. The mill quotes wholesale and project orders and replies within 24 hours.

Can I order a sample before production?

Yes. Use Request Sample and name the species and grade. The sample is the check before a project order is locked.

Do you cut veneer to size?

Custom Cut-to-Size is a published mill service. The quote confirms the finished size.

Are quarter cut and rift cut on the product page?

Catalog rows are plain slice and straight grain. Quarter and rift cuts are quoted when the project specifies them.

How do lead times work?

The homepage says “In Stock, Ships in 7 Days”. Each product page shows a catalog lead time of 10–15 days. The formal quote states the lead time for the specification you send.

Which documents come with an export order?

Certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, ISPM 15 / IPPC packaging, FSC certification and a third-party test report are listed for formal inquiry. ISPM 15 packaging is published for export orders.
